- Student Body: A lot of the students are previously stay-at-home moms or single moms hoping to get a job that pays more than minimum wage to help put food on the table. There are also a lot of high school students looking to get ahead start on their college studies. There are plenty of typical college freshman as well but many of them, like myself, intend to transfer to a four-year university. It's a very diverse school in just about every way, including age. There are even some grandparents going to school. However, you only need to be a resident of Austin, Texas and have a high school diploma or GED (or foreign equivalent) to be entered into the school. Even though it is a community college, there are still a lot of great professors there. The staff is very helpful in making sure you get signed up the the right classes and are staying on-track with you grades. There are also plenty of places to study on-campus and multiple ways to contact professors if needed.
- Campus Resources: Very good hours for libraries and computer labs and testing centers.
- Academic Experience: It is proving to be a challenge. My unique course, that seems to be the road less traveled, is in American Sign Language Interpreting and asks for us to go to multiple locations for classes as well as we are asked to go to deaf events where we are fully submerged in the culture and not offered much assistance. In the deaf community we are welcomed with some and pushed away by others, this career choice is a challenge but seeing the atmosphere in my surroundings makes it all worthwhile.*(4)
