哲学（Philosophy）专业在国外大学的专业设置里，一般被视为人文学科，设于文理学院或文学院之下。哲学专业在多数学校的本科阶段一般都会设有，也被视作是通识教育的一部分。研究阶段一般只招收PhD学生，招收的人数通常不多，一般会要求学生递交一份写作样本。哲学的分支主要包括：形而上学、知识论、伦理学、逻辑学和美学。
英文的哲学——Philosophy一词，源于古希腊语中的φιλοσοφία，意思为“爱智慧”，有时也译为“智慧的朋友”。一般认为，古希腊思想家毕达哥拉斯最先引入“哲学家”和“哲学”这两个术语。1874年，日本启蒙家西周，在《百一新论》中首先用汉文“哲学”来翻译 philosophy 一词。*(1)
